Our Story
A Tale of Two Farmers and Their Dream
Deer Creek Off Grid was our place to explore, learn, build and try out everything we had read and dreamed about. It was our laboratory and playground for 4 years! Chickens, Pigs, Rabbits, Deer, year round live Creek - we have have it all!
Frequently asked questions
Water
Deer Creek Off Grid has abundant, year round water, a creek that runs through the middle of the property, that's Deer Creek. We installed two 15' wells on the back side of the property with 4" PVC access for standard well pumps. We also built a tower with an IBC tote and piping and a pump to fill and act as water tower. Water is not a problem on this homestead.
Cabins
Two cabins come with the farm, both have their own power system, wood stove, are fully insulated, and come with appliances, we bought the buildings locally and finished them ourselves. A labor of love and the larger cabin can be easily moved to make room for a traditional stick frame home. A spot has been cleared just for that purpose.
Food Sys.
There are various food, animal and recycling systems designed into the farm. They are all in close proximity allowing for ease of maintenance. They are also adjacent to the creek, and one of the water wells. Worse case scenario, everything can be watered by hand. We've done it :). Two green houses. Steel Chicken Coop and Wooden Mobile coop. Orchards, and Apple Trellis System - Steel, Rabbit Pens, Raised Garden Beds & Cattle Panel Trellises throughout, Penned Garden Areas, Worm in Ground composting system, 2 Large Animal Pens with electrical fencing ready for several different sized animals. Designed to feed several families, animal cleaning station with concrete pad.
Power
There are two separate power systems on the property. One battery bank is NiFe Nickel Iron, 24kW @ 48v, and the other is 12kW @ 48 Lithium. Both have 4.5kW Inverter on the larger cabin, and 6kW Inverter on the smaller cabin. Everything is steel we put together on site. I had plans to move the larger cabin to make room for a stick frame house, and then route the power over to a new battery room closer to both smaller cabins. But that project is on hold awaiting a new owner. There is also a radio tower for cell to internet, but we upgraded to StarLink when it was available.
Storage
Two shipping containers and an aircraft style roof covers 10 years of firewood heating fuel for both houses, it also provides storage inside for tools, wares, properly stored food, and more.

I chose Perry County because it was unrestricted land, and the community was still actively supporting small farm operations. I wanted to be able to explore and try out everything I had read in books and had seen on youtube. This environment was perfect, we were able to build to our hearts content.
Our design philosophy was DIY, figure it out, if we had to buy a kit, we bought a kit, if we had to rent equipment, we rented equipment. We also took a Permaculture course by Jeff Lawton and did our best to institute what we learned from that course into the property design.
Deer Creek Off Grid is truly off grid, it has it's own power, water, heat systems, and isn't reliant on any civil contracts. Outside the propety taxes and county road maintenance, you're are on our own out there and it's great!
The surrounding farms, and community are also very supportive if you need or want it. You can find animals locally, get all sorts of farm products such as honey, raw milk, cheese, timber, and much more. The self sufficient mindset is very ingrained in the local culture which also helped influence our design philosophy.
Our Farm Philosophy

Road
When we bought Deer Creek Off Grid, there wasn't any access besides the black top. So we rented some equipment and figured out how to build our way in. Never having built a road before, it took us a few tries, but we finally got it established. See the progress in the photo's.
